Did your mother ever tell you, “The Lord helps those who help themselves”? Was Watty Piper’s “Little Engine That Could” a story to be read over and over in your house? Americans are firm believers in self-improvement. Jessica Lamb-Shapiro’s father was a child psychologist; she grew up in the world of self-help, but she still has a flying phobia and difficulty dealing with her emotions.
She sets out to map the labyrinthine land of self-help, attending seminars on finding “Mr. Right”, reading books by Andrew Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale and Napoleon Hill along the way. She learns there are no easy answers and many hard questions, but she also begins a dialogue with her father regarding the circumstances of her mother’s early unexplained death.
