The Reading Program

Imagine looking at these letters and not being able to make sense of them-not being able to translate them into words that have meaning for your everyday life. Following medication instructions, applying for a job or a driver’s license, reading a map, email or phone text-all these tasks become nightmarish without the reading skills to complete them. Over 20% of Californians struggle because they lack literacy. Many (but not all) are coming to English as a second language.

The Mountain View Library offers an opportunity to improve this situation. As a participating member in the Reading Program for the Santa Clara County Library District, we provide space for trained volunteer tutors to work with learners weekly on a one-to-one basis. At this time, the Reading Program is actively seeking learners to participate. Stephanie Lane (650)526-7016 is the contact for the program.

If you’re interested in teaching a learner, call (408) 262-1349 or contact the Reading Program by to register. Once registration is complete, you’ll be able to attend tutor orientation at a local library. MVPL will host orientation sessions on Thursday March 7, 2-3 pm or 6-7 pm in the Library Community Room, followed by tutor training on Saturday, March 16 1-6 pm in the Library Community Room.
